Chapter 1: Foretelling the Kingdom
Several years
past, after the visit of the Father and the Son, before Joseph had a
manifestation of the work that would be required of him. Joseph recorded of this
event: “I betook myself to prayer and
supplication to Almighty God for forgiveness of all my sins and follies, and
also for a manifestation to me, that I might know of my state and standing
before him; for I had full confidence in obtaining a divine manifestation, as I
previously had one.” As Joseph
prayed his room turned light and an angel appeared by his bed: “He called me by
name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to
me, and that his name was Moroni; that God had a work for me to do; and that my
name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues,
or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people. He said
there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the
former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang.
He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in
it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;” (JS-History 1:29, 33
- 34) John
recorded the vision he had of this event when he wrote: “And I saw another angel
fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them
that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and
people, (Rev. 14:6)
The Lord
identified this vision as being fulfilled in the coming of Moroni and the coming
forth of the Book of Mormon: “And now, verily saith the Lord, that these things
might be known among you, O inhabitants of the earth, I have sent forth mine
angel flying through the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel, who
hath appeared unto some and hath committed it unto man, who shall appear unto
many that dwell on the earth. And this gospel shall be preached unto every
nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. And the servants of God shall go
forth, saying with a loud voice: Fear God and give glory to him, for the hour of
his judgment is come;” (D&C 133:36-38) The Lord further declared: “…the hour
cometh that I will drink of the fruit of the vine with you on the earth, and
with Moroni, whom I have sent unto you to reveal the Book of Mormon, containing
the fulness of my everlasting gospel, to whom I have committed the keys of the
record of the stick of Ephraim;” (D&C 27:5) On September 22, 1827 Joseph Smith received
the plates, and began to translate. Shortly after beginning the translation
Joseph copied some of the characters from the plates and gave them to Martin
Harris. Joseph recorded the following: “Sometime in this month of
February, the aforementioned Mr. Martin Harris came to our place, got the
characters which I had drawn off the plates, and started with them to the city
of New York. For what took place relative to him and the characters, I refer to
his own account of the circumstances, as he related them to me after his return,
which was as follows: "I went to the city of New
York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the
translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his
literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct,
more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed
him those, which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian,
Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave
me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they were true
characters, and that the translation of such of them as had been translated was
also correct. I took the certificate and put it into my pocket, and was just
leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called me back, and asked me how the young
man found out that there were gold plates in the place where he found them. I
answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him. “He then said to me, 'Let me
see that certificate.' I accordingly took it out of my pocket and gave it to
him, when he took it and tore it to pieces, saying that there was no such thing
now as ministering of angels, and that if I would bring the plates to him he
would translate them. I informed him that part of the plates were sealed, and
that I was forbidden to bring them. He replied, 'I cannot read a sealed book.' I
left him and went to Dr. Mitchell, who sanctioned what Professor Anthon had said
respecting both the characters and the translation.” (JSH 1:63-65.) Isaiah spoke of this event saying: “And the vision
of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which
men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he
saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: And the book is delivered to him that is
not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not
learned.” (Isa. 29:11,12) Notice that the learned only had the “words of the
book” while the unlearned had the book Nephi expounded on
Isaiah’s writings “as the Spirit hath constrained me” and testified “I know that
they must surely come to pass.” (2 Nephi 28:1) Nephi declared: “But the book shall be
delivered unto a man, and he shall deliver the words of the book, which are the
words of those who have slumbered in the dust, and he shall deliver these words
unto another; “But the words which are
sealed he shall not deliver, neither shall he deliver the book. For the book
shall be sealed by the power of God, and the revelation which was sealed shall
be kept in the book until the own due time of the Lord, that they may come
forth; for behold, they reveal all things from the foundation of the world unto
the end thereof. “And the day cometh that the
words of the book which were sealed shall be read upon the house tops; and they
shall be read by the power of Christ; and all things shall be revealed unto the
children of men which ever have been among the children of men, and which ever
will be even unto the end of the earth. “Wherefore, at that day when
the book shall be delivered unto the man of whom I have spoken, the book shall
be hid from the eyes of the world, that the eyes of none shall behold it save it
be that three witnesses shall behold it, by the power of God, besides him
to whom the book shall be delivered; and they shall testify to the truth of the
book and the things therein. “And there is none other which
shall view it, save it be a few according to the will of God, to bear
testimony of His word unto the children of men; for the Lord God hath said that
the words of the faithful should speak as if it were from the dead. “Wherefore, the Lord God will
proceed to bring forth the words of the book; and in the mouth of as many
witnesses as seemeth Him good will He establish His word; and wo be unto him
that rejecteth the word of God! “But behold, it shall come to
pass that the Lord God shall say unto him to whom He shall deliver the book:
Take these words which are not sealed and deliver them to another, that he may
show them unto the learned, saying: Read this, I pray thee. And the learned
shall say: Bring hither the book, and I will read them. “ And now, because of the
glory of the world and to get gain will they say this, and not for the glory of
God. “And the man shall say: I
cannot bring the book, for it is sealed. “Then shall the learned say: I
cannot read it. “Wherefore it shall come to
pass, that the Lord God will deliver again the book and the words thereof to him
that is not learned; and the man that is not learned shall say: I am not
learned. “Then shall the Lord God say
unto him: The learned shall not read them, for they have rejected them, and I am
able to do mine own work; wherefore thou shalt read the words which I shall give
unto thee.” (2 Nephi 27:9 - 22) Nephi declared
several events which he beheld, the coming of the Book of Mormon, that the
sealed portion of the book would contain a history of the world from the
beginning to end of the earth, that Martin Harris would take the “words of the
book” to the learned, and that there would be three witnesses “by the power of
God” and a few others would view the plates. Fulfilling this
prophecy Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris recorded their
testimonies in the Book of Mormon and never recounted that testimony.
The Testimony of Three Witnesses.
Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues,
and people, unto whom this work shall come; That we, through the grace of God
the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this
record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites,
their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of
which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the
gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know
of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the
engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the
power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an
angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes,
that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that
it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld
and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvelous in our eyes.
Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of
it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of
these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our
garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment seat
of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be
to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen. Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, Martin Harris
(DHC 1: 56.) Nephi’s words that
a few others would behold the plates was also fulfilled when eight other men
beheld and handled the plates under natural circumstances:
The Testimony of Eight Witnesses.
Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues,
and people, unto whom this work shall come: that Joseph Smith, Jun., the
translator of this work, has shown unto us the plates of which hath been spoken,
which have the appearance of gold; and as many of the leaves as the said Smith
has translated we did handle with our hands; and we also saw the engravings
thereon, all of which has the appearance of ancient work, and of curious
workmanship. And this we bear record with words of soberness, that the said
Smith has shown unto us, for we have seen and hefted, and know of a surety that
the said Smith has got the plates of which we have spoken. And we give our names
unto the world to witness unto the world that which we have seen. And we lie
not, God bearing witness of it.

Samuel H. Smith (DHC 1: 57 - 58.) Isaiah
viewed the effect of the Book of Mormon upon those who would read the book: “And in
that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind
shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among
men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.” (Isa. 29:18,19) When the Book of
Mormon was published, it was not used to replace the Bible but was used hand in
hand with the Bible as Ezekiel foretold:
“The word of the LORD came
again unto me, saying, “Moreover, thou son of man,
take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the
children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it,
For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his
companions: “And join them one to another
into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. “And when the children of thy
people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest
by these? “Say unto them, Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the
hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them
with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick,
and they shall be one in mine hand. “And the sticks whereon thou
writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes. “And say unto them, Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen,
whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into
their own land: “And I will make them one
nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to
them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided
into two kingdoms any more at all: (Ezekiel 37:15 - 28)
We see that the Book of
Mormon, referred to as “the stick of Joseph” is joined with the Bible referred
to as “stick of Judah” and they shall made into “one stick, and they shall be
one in mine hand.” Ezekiel explains that the coming of this record would be
about the time of the restoration of Israel as the Lord explained; “And verily I say unto you, I
give unto you a sign, that ye may know the time when these things shall be about
to take place—that I shall gather in, from their long dispersion, My people, O
house of Israel, and shall establish again among them My Zion; “And behold, this is the thing
which I will give unto you for a sign—for verily I say unto you that when these
things which I declare unto you, and which I shall declare unto you hereafter of
Myself, and by the power of the Holy Ghost which shall be given unto you of the
Father, shall be made known unto the Gentiles that they may know concerning this
people who are a remnant of the house of Jacob, and concerning this My people
who shall be scattered by them; “Verily, verily, I say unto
you, when these things shall be made known unto them of the Father, and shall
come forth of the Father, from them unto you; “For it is wisdom in the
Father that they should be established in this land, and be set up as a free
people by the power of the Father, that these things might come forth from them
unto a remnant of your seed, that the covenant of the Father may be fulfilled
which he hath covenanted with his people, O house of Israel; “Therefore, when these works
and the works which shall be wrought among you hereafter shall come forth from
the Gentiles, unto your seed which shall dwindle in unbelief because of
iniquity; “For thus it behooveth the
Father that it should come forth from the Gentiles, that He may show forth His
power unto the Gentiles, for this cause that the Gentiles, if they will not
harden their hearts, that they may repent and come unto Me and be baptized in My
name and know of the true points of My doctrine, that they may be numbered among
My people, O house of Israel; “And when these things come to
pass that thy seed shall begin to know these things—it shall be a sign unto
them, that they may know that the work of the Father hath already commenced unto
the fulfilling of the covenant which He hath made unto the people who are of the
house of Israel.” (3 Nephi 21:1 - 7)
